DEFINITION OF TERMS ABOUT ANARCHY

DEFINITION OF TERMS ABOUT ANARCHY:

ANARCHISM or ANARCHY = From the Greek; meaning "without authority" or "without rulers", it refers to a human society without a State system of government, i.e. societies where no State has ever existed, or societies where an existing State has collapsed, or societies whether real or speculative where the State has consciously been abolished. It is a rejection of any form of enforced/compulsory State government, institutional control, and corporate domination over the population in favour of self-determination by individual citizens, or by groups of citizens acting in co-operation (sometimes referred to as 'collectives'). Anarchists are not as a whole unified in their ethics, methodology, and opinions as to the form of community that would exist if State authority were removed, or how to achieve such a state of being in modern times. There is also great division between anarchists about issues such as whether property should be owned by the community or by individuals, and also about how people should be paid for work.

ANARCHO-PRIMITIVISM or PRIMITIVISM = An anarchic philosophy that advocates not only the destruction of State control, but also the destruction of modern civilisation itself in favour of reversion back to the so-called Primitive state of existence that humans lived in prior to industrialisation, and in the views of some Primitivists, right back to the human state prior to the advent of agriculture. There is marked disagreement between Primitivists regarding how far removed from modern civilisation to the basic Primitive state we should go, or how this could be achieved, or how successful any such change would be. Primitivists are not allied with any other branch of anarchist thinkers, except for possibly Green Anarchists and Post-Left Anarchists, because they oppose all forms of authority including those upon which Communism and Marxism rely on and upon which most other forms of anarchist motivation are based.

NEOPRIMITIVISM = A further development of anarcho-primitivism in that this is not a philosophy but an ACTIVE movement towards the elimination of the controlling mechanism of modern technology in Western society (and for some supporters actual technology itself) and the removal of all State and corporate systems of control in favour of a return to our relationship with nature and the so-called genuine human values such as personal relationships, family, children, and community cooperation. Neoprimitivists (Neos) vary in the depth of their belief as to how far technology should be removed from society, with some favouring a level of development akin to the pre-digital mid-1900s, while others favour a Medieval level or earlier - the crucial factor being the total removal of control (corporate and social) that modern technology exerts. A key motivation among Neos is not simply the destruction of State and corporate power, but also the dissolution of the 'invisible' control mechanisms of society itself, i.e. zero social conventions in favour of absolute self-determination and absolute personal liberty. Far from being retrograde, many Neoprimitivists regard their philosophy and action as the positive evolution of society towards a higher and more sophisticated level of human civilisation.

GREEN ANARCHY = A school of anarchic philosophy and action that bases its motivation upon environmental ideologies, and which favours nature above the manmade. For example, Green Anarchists take action to preserve forests destined for destruction in roadbuilding or construction. Green Anarchy is a very active movement all over the world and acts against corporate harm of the environment in a variety of ways. This branch of anarchy is feared by corporations as a serious threat, because it vehemently opposes the commercial exploitation of natural resources and animals which corporations believe are a resource they have the Right to take for their financial gain, therefore State Law in all countries deals with the actions and plans of Green Anarchists in the most severe manner possible. Some Green Anarchists are also deeply involved with the animal Rights movement.

POST-LEFT ANARCHY = These anarchists seek to move away from the Leftist ideologies and associations upon which traditional anarchist thought has been based, and it seeks to move towards a philosophy that isn't influenced by the confines of Leftist dictation, but is rather more it's own school (or pool) of radical independent free-thought. This movement includes many different groups, of which Neoprimitivism and Anarcho-Primitivism are probably the largest.

NEW PURITANS or PURITANS = This is a movement of social anarchy, which instead of necessarily targeting the State and its authority it targets modern Western civilisation itself with the aim of changing what it perceives to be a trend towards negative self-harming influences and behaviour that prevents the genuine positive progress, maturing, and evolution of human society, civilisation, and the human race as a whole. New Puritans seek to remove negative influences from human society with the expectation that individuals, communities, and society as a whole will then be able to develop in a better, more positive way that focuses on values such as personal relationships, families, community spirit, education, health, and fitness, etc, away from our growing dependence upon negative influences such as alcohol, violence, and drugs, etc, that lead to self-destructive lifestyles, greed, unhappiness, and ill health.

The Modern Primitive

How can the Primitive survive in modern society? Should she go live on a remote Scottish island away from it all, or should she integrate into the poisonous technological world?

Personally I believe that the only way we can bring down a system is from within, because we need to know the enemy, we need to know their techno ways, the rules and regulations, the power system and the State - knowledge is power; and armed with knowledge we can use our cunning to at least jam the works.

So the conscientious Primitive has to make that terrible sacrifice of going against their own instincts of living a simple, non-technological life in harmony with nature and her fellows, to remain in modern society and suffer it so she can merge and mingle and nibble away at the regime from within; like a persistent rat living under the floorboards gnawing at your woodwork and sneaking about when you aren't there to see it. The way of the successful anarcho-primitive is a chameleon merging into modern society in order to work on its collapse without its knowledge - so we're like the fleas sucking the blood of a huge beast until it dies of anaemia.

We have to do this to play our small part in bringing down the system; be your target the Gov, EU, UN, World Bank, or specific multinational organisations or corporations. I take heart in my frustrations by remembering the solitary woodpecker that featured on TV news, which successfully managed to stop a NASA Space Shuttle launch all by its little self. The woodpecker decided the insulating tiles on the nose cone were a good place to have a good long peck and in full view of the cameras it worked away like it would do on any tree until the tiles were so destroyed the launch had to be cancelled and the Shuttle removed for repairs. That woodpecker teaches us a Great lesson - that it's not always necessary to make grand gestures, or to take huge actions, or to make a big noise, etc - often all that's needed is that persistent, strategic, annoying pecking or nibbling by just one person; and that action alone can do FAR more damage and have FAR more impact and implications than many huge protests or drastic actions.

Take heart also from the so-called Electric Ants found in a few parts of the warmer world that are attracted to the electromagnetism emitted by electrical cables. These tiny creatures band together and wreak total havoc every year with electrical systems found outdoors, such as those controlling traffic lights and telecoms. These insects show us that working together even in tiny ways we can make huge impacts (out of sight and out of mind) by performing seemingly small actions in strategic places when we operate as a focused group.

So as covert Primitivists in the modern world we need to remember that woodpecker, and the actions of mice and rats and termites and other similar creatures, and how these small things live with us and can impact massively on our systems, movements, communications, and lives.

As modern Primitivists we need to be thinking very whole-istically about the full wide picture, and about how we can cleverly and covertly impact upon THEIR world to help the system crumble and fall in on itself - it's not so hard actually, because people are so very blinded and foggy these days that they notice so little of what's going on in real life - that means they don't notice other people who they deem to be of no value to them; this can be used GREATLY to the advantage of the Primitivist - for example - EVERY corporation employs cleaners, unskilled labour, and tradespeople, so if you can get one of these jobs and play the role quietly you can get amazing access to areas, people, and information that are totally out of bounds to others; so imagine what you could do with that power! Another way to slip 'under the radar' is to play the role of Dirt; such as a homeless person on the streets as you'll be totally ignored and can covertly watch targets, scope areas, and get up to sneaky deeds in the night without suspicion. Dirt is trash in the mind of those in modern society who choose to ignore it at all costs and try not even to look at, so it's a great role for many covert duties. Finally there's the role of Posh; you can either play fake Posh or genuine Posh, but the key is manner and appearance to blend in and be one of their own. It's amazing how accepted you are to these people when dressed in 'high class' clothes (rather than clown gear or scruffs), but you need to be quiet to infiltrate them, to observe, and to wait for the chances to make your moves undetected in the most appropriate ways. The role of secretary is a good one, as these people metaphorically hold their bosses balls in their hands each day and have the power to crush them at will if they choose to. Being fake Posh allows you to mingle at corporate events and even to get close to politicians in relaxed circumstances - the possibilities for covert action as a result are very high. Of course the best kind of Posh is when someone with genuine status turns Primitive and decides to support the cause, or if you manage to land yourself a plum role high up the hierarchy, or in service of one of the mega-corps, EU, UN, etc - THEN you have the opportunity to allow access for your fellows and to do Great things to advance the cause.

Finally... the main thing we need to guard against is not falling into the techno trap, because they're able to monitor and trace virtually EVERY digital action that we make, so therefore be extremely careful about how you communicate (there are safe ways). It is possible to integrate into the poisonous modern world and to maintain your sanity, integrity, and pursuit of Primitivism to a moderate degree, and also to take nature breaks for holidays to stop your head exploding and to recharge your energy - it's a huge benefit if you and your group can work with a supporter who's prepared to be your 'Digital Link' (DL) - this way you and your group can live the proper way using cash to buy what you need without resorting to owning bank accounts or plastic cards, because all such dealings come thru your DL who has bank accounts and plastic they can use on your behalf in exchange for cash. Your DL can also access the Internet for you, gather news, and update websites, and basically keep all your trails clean so you have no digital footprints in modern society. Though there is some risk to the DL they should be clever enough to keep their own trail clean and not to create any links with members of their group. The DL is your tool, but shouldn't be the group Leader (if you have one) - any Leader should be the person least likely to attract suspicion, i.e. an elderly retired person, any female, or a Posh. With the advent of VeriSign payments via thumbprint (or via chip implant) likely to be introduced before 2010 the need for a group DL may become essential for those Primitivists living in modern society. Otherwise have no group at all but instigate a covert network that never meets as a whole and in which no member knows more than two other members (like a WW2 Nazi resistance network) - I'll write about that process later.

With our increasing modern reliance upon digital technology the system gets weaker and weaker, and increasingly easier to take down. With even just a few of us scattered around the UK we can impact the Gov, infrastructure, commerce, and communications with massive implications as long as we keep up that nibbling and pecking both covertly and right in their faces without them noticing... power to the people... destroy technology... return to nature.

(Endnote: I must add that the absolute aim of anarcho-primitivism in modern society - or maybe it should be re-labelled neoprimitivism - is the destruction of society's dependence on technology and the State's control of citizens via technology, plus State, media, and commercial propaganda that fuels Greed and our dependence upon technology away from what's actually important in life, i.e. our relationships, family, community, children, nature, etc. The neoprimitive is NOT aiming to destroy society in the sense of harming PEOPLE, nature, or animals in any way, and that HAS to be properly understood by all. Terrorists who target people and small businesses that ordinary citizens depend on for their family livelihood are NOT anarchists. The true anarchist PROTECTS and DEFENDS the Rights of citizens against the State and against the totalitarian regime that operates to repress them from pursuing a decent wholesome lifestyle. The neoprimitive targets technology itself, the State and its controlling mechanisms, corporate entities, infrastructure, communications networks, the media, and anything relevant to the cause, such as structures of control, domination, and exploitation with the goal of assisting the emergence of an archetypal, social, autonomous, cooperative community - to do so is ANARCHY. We do NOT EVER target individual people, nor the individual small independent businesses of ordinary citizens - to do so is TERRORISM and is utterly anathema to the Primitive who is a DEFENDER of LIFE and the ENEMY of technology, oppression, Greed, the trappings of modern society, and the systems and mechanisms that enslave the populous under State control thus steering them away from the genuine values of Humanity.)

Genuine Human Values & The Neoprimitive Aim

The Neoprimitive aim is the total collapse of modern society and modern so-called civilisation together with all its controlling mechanisms and structures so that humanity returns to an archetypal state of being in which the genuine human values can once again be expressed without any dependency upon technology, State, or corporations.

Neoprimitives reject modern technology (i.e. the so-called advances since the 1970s involving microchips, the Internet, mobile communications, CCTV, and digital media, etc), because modern technology fosters a virtual reality that undermines, erodes, and destroys real human meaning and interpersonal solidarity by replacing it with an addiction to, and a dependency upon electronic gadgets that lead to individual isolation, separation within families, and disparity within communities, thus undermining and destroying the genuine human values that are necessary for a healthy social community to progress and flourish.

As the Fifth Estate stated in 1981: "Technology is not a simple tool which can be used in any way we like. It is a form of social organisation, a set of social relations. It has its own laws. If we are to engage in its use, we must accept its authority. The enormous size, complex interconnections and stratification of tasks which make up modern technological systems make authoritarian command necessary and independent, individual decision-making impossible." Thus technology alienates us from our own Self, from others, and from the natural world - it is the drug of the masses, and it is the means of State and corporate control over every aspect of our life and work from birth to death.

Our dependency on technology makes us lazy, stupid, impatient, irritable, brain-fogged, angry, Greedy, and uncaring - it brings NOTHING positive to the human condition. Most Neoprimitivists however don't reject useful machinery and pre-1970s electronic advances of modern life, such as electric lights and motorised vehicles, because there's a very fundamental difference between these and the technological systems as described above - principally the defining marker is of WHO is in control. You can wire up your own house and run it off your own microgeneration sustainable power system (i.e. solar), you can make your own battery vehicle and recharge it via a domestic wind/water turbine, you can build and/or repair many domestic machines including some stand-alone electronic devices, you can use walkie-talkies freely without a network connection, you could even build a radio receiver and transmit from your own local station - YOU are in control - however, you could never build a microchip or a mobile phone or a DVD player, plus every operation of your technological and digital devices requires your connection to and dependency upon a corporate network, and a corporate bill to pay, and a bank account, and a plastic card, etc, etc. So the issue is one of CONTROL and DEPENDENCY upon an authoritarian system that dictates the terms of your life, and generally the issue of modern technology is not specifically about the actual DEVICES themselves - i.e. an unconnected PC using an independent operating system (not Microsoft!) is a useful tool for writing letters, however dependency upon such a tool for playing computer games alone for hours on end IS a Neoprimitivist issue, as is the issue of Greed and rampant consumerism associated with modern technological devices.

Neoprimitivism is about repairing and healing human society, and about assisting it to return to its roots prior to the advent of modern technology, and prior to the advent of all forms of mass citizen control that have been imposed upon us via the Gov, EU, UN, and multinational corporations, and even prior to the societal imposition of modern conventions upon us, so that all citizens are free from any dictates regarding how they choose to live - for example; people could choose to have very conventional relationships, or one person living with several spouses, or have 'group' marriages in which everyone is partnered with each other and share childcare among all the adults - there would be no social 'convention' to break or to adhere to, except in those communities where the members decided to adopt their own agreed conventions - it certainly wouldn't be up to the Gov, or EU, or political parties, or the Left or Right to dictate the way we should live as free citizens.

The original aim of anarcho-primitivism was not to replicate or RETURN to the Primitive, but to view the Primitive as a source of inspiration that exemplifies true anarchy (or Statelessness). However such a RETURN to the pre-techno Primitive cooperative union of networked communities IS the aim of Neoprimitivism, and THIS is the significant difference between the two ideologies. You could say that anarcho-primitivism is the THEORY, philosophy, or the academic pondering about a return to the Primitive, while neoprimitivism is the ACTION aimed at getting us there. Neoprimitivism seeks the TOTAL destruction of the Leviathan; the beast that is modern society, the machine that is modern civilisation - we piss on it! But for those who don't understand this ethic it's all too easy to misunderstand and believe our intention is to harm PEOPLE, but the aim couldn't be further away from that fear. For the Neo ALL life is precious; from nature, to animals, to people - so to cause them harm is completely anathema.

People are a big difficulty as they become so entwined with the system that Neos can feel like those people and the Leviathan are one and the same (especially its controllers), however the primary ethos that all Neos and citizens need to remember is that the people have become so blinded, brainwashed, and fogged by the system that it controls them so completely it's become impossible for them to think of life being possible in any other way - the people can't be blamed or harmed, because they're as innocents corrupted; they've been manipulated into total dependency upon technology, modern civilisation, and the State - they've become addicted to it even though it's harming them, and their children, and their futures.

Neoprimitivism aims to REMOVE the addiction, and the controlling systems, and the technology, and the State control - it is TRUE anarchy - it aims to remove the Leviathan that is modern civilisation and State/corporate control, and return human society to its archetypal form that focuses on the genuine human values of family, home, community, cooperation, and harmony with nature. This does NOT mean living in caves (unless you chose to do so). The power would be with the people, and they could form any kind of society or community they chose to make - for example; our society would function beautifully without technology or State/corporate control as a nation of interlinked cooperative, self-sufficient, autonomous working communities that consisted of independent non-profit 'businesses' that traded throughout the network on behalf of their communities to meet everyone's needs so we'd all be comfortable and have what we needed. There wouldn't be any system, mechanism, or structure of State or corporate control - as on many tropical island communities and in many forest tribes; decisions would be made by each community with members having an equal voice, with perhaps a small elect of citizens such as tribal Elders holding the casting vote when the community was undecided. If any laws or conventions were to be imposed then the community would decide them - and the communities would be free to admit or reject anyone they chose to be a member, which would create a wide variety of different types of community with their own laws and conventions that they were happy to live with - basically this would be a return to the days of independent autonomous small village communities that existed prior to feudalism, visited by travelling traders who'd sell or exchange goods from their own community and return with goods needed by their own people.

The only continuing dilemma is the discussion about whether the imposition of Primitivism upon society is akin to forcing a control mechanism upon them in a dictatorial way similar to how the State and corporations currently rule our existence; and if that's so, then the triggered collapse of modern civilisation could not be justified. The answer to this needs a lot of thought and discussion about whether it's in the best interests of humanity and the progress of society to cut it off from State and corporate control and technology, and therefore force it to struggle as it re-forms itself and gives birth to a new type of civilisation, which will be a hard and possibly long chaotic process before it succeeds - or whether it's best to remain on the course we're currently fixed on so that humanity becomes 100% dependent upon technology and 100% controlled by the State and corporations, because people feel reassured by tight suppression and the feeling of security they have in isolation from others? Do we have a definitive answer?

But how could real Primitiveness be brought about anyway? Well the most radical way would be via an act of nature that caused a collapse of global authority systems and technology - i.e. a big meteor strike, or a mega Mass Solar Ejection. Or a similar catastrophe wrought by Gov such as a global nuclear war. Any of these global events would reduce the population to a primitive state. Similarly if terrorists or anarchists planted strategic EM bombs that wiped all computer data and killed global comms this would remove all our digital technology and could be a precursor of returning to the Primitive if citizens then refused State control and rebelled against it. The final way is dealt with in some length in my previous essay entitled "The Modern Primitive" that involves collapsing the system covertly from within.
